·        FDA GMPs govern a plant's maintenance, construction and sanitation practices as well as the plant's manufacturing and production processes.

  1. FDA's GMPs developed specifically for bottled water

Bottled water GMP's include:

·        Plant construction and design

·        Sanitary facilities and operations

·        Equipment design and construction

·        Production and process controls specific to the production and processing of bottled drinking water

·        Record keeping inspection of all activities as they relate to bottled water

  1. State Inspections

·        In addition to the FDA regulations, states also conduct inspections of bottled water sources and facilities

  1. IBWA Model Code

·        The IBWA also maintains its own set of standards.  All IBWA members are subject to an annual unannounced inspection.  The IBWA Model Code is stricter than the FDA GMPs. 

·        All imported waters must meet the federal and state standards as applicable.  They must also meet the standards of IBWA

  1. FDA Quality Standards and testing of finished product

Packaged in Accordance with FDA bottled water GMPs

Failure to comply with any of the FDA GMPs can render the bottled water product adulterated and subject to regulatory action.
